Removing a kitten from it's mother at a younger age will tend to give you a more neurotic cat, with a greater potential for negative behaviour that will be very difficult to correct. Allowing the kitten to complete it's emotional growth with the mother will give a kitten the best chance to grow to be a well behaved cat who can bond well with it's owner. A kitten that is removed younger will tend to be more dependant and needy. If you can't meet these needs (guessing you are not going to devote your life 24/7 to making sure your cat feels secure) it will likely withdraw from you some what, decreasing the bond you seek.

Some cats do not "fit" with some people, the same way not everyone you meet is going to be a close friend. Adopting an adult cat at a shelter may give you the opportunity to find a cat that "fits" with you as it's personality will be more developed

Kittens are cuddly with most people so there is little chance to see if there is a real chemistry. An adult cat can bond a deeply with you as a kitten could, but that depends on the cat and on your ability to be part of that bond. The same issues that might keep you from having a good bond with a kitten may keep you form having a good bond with the adult.

My guess is that for you a older kitten who is feeling solid in it's world and is ready to leave mom and explore the world would be your best bet to have a deep bond.

You need to be consistent and present with your cat. By present I mean when you play or spend time with your cat you need to have 100% of your focus on doing that. Not talking on the phone or other things that take your energy away from your cat.

Hope this helps.
