yes it can be a bad thing. if a horse lays down to long especially on its side it can crush its own organs. but you shouldn't worry too much unless your horse has been laying down for an unually long time or if you notice that hes been acting unusual or ill. cow style isn't as harmful so you shouldn't worry so much about that.

It's not bad if they're laying down for a short period of time. Horses like to sleep an hour or two laying down just like other animals do. BUT, it's really bad when they're laying down ALL the time, because they can crush their organs like intestines, lungs and diaphragm, etc. and they could die.
