A brainstorming session is when a group of people come together to generate ideas and solutions for a specific topic or problem. For example, a team of marketing professionals might have a brainstorming session to come up with creative campaign ideas for a new product launch. During the session, everyone shares their thoughts and ideas, and the group works together to build on and refine those ideas.

What is a brain storming meeting?

Brainstorming is a technique by way of which, we try to capture upon the creativity of the participating members of a meeting. Brain storming sessions are group activities, generally in the form of meetings. Brainstorming is a relatively simple and cheap way of generating new ideas & solutions. It helps a company to break away or discard, old, ineffective ideas, which are no longer applicable in today competitive environment. Whenever you or your company requires new ways of thinking or out of the box solutions to a typical problem, brainstorming is a highly affective tool, in the hands of managers. It is a technique that can be used in almost any situation where new solutions to a problem and new ideas need to be generated. The most important condition for its success is we require an environment free of criticism, so that the members of the meeting can contribute their ideas freely. Generally, within the brainstorming meeting, a leader is appointed who is responsible for controlling the brainstorming session. Another person is appointed, who is responsible for recording the ideas or solutions generated during the meeting (in a note pad or flipchart). At the time of brainstorming, the leader should make it a point that, participating members of the meeting can freely give their ideas without any hesitation or criticism & this can achieved by avoiding any judgment regarding their relevance or importance. Each idea should be simply noted down at this stage. In addition, if two ideas or options seem quite similar, they can be grouped together as one, by the leader of the brainstorming session. Generation of ideas can be either organized or un-organized. In an organized session, each member of the meeting is given an opportunity to contribute his or her ideas before moving to the next member. While in an un-organized session, all members freely contribute without any specific order. The leader also keeps a watch on the time duration allotted to the activity. He has to keep on encouraging the member to contribute their ideas, freely. It is suggested that an effective brainstorming session should last for no more than 15-20 minutes. Once the session has been completed, thought can then be given to selecting ideas to move forward for further consideration and evaluation. The aim is to generate as many ideas as possible that can then be evaluated at a later date.
