Most CEOs recognize that the corporate culture is designed and driven from the top down. They communicate with employees in letters and other ways in order to make clear how they want to organization to operate and what values they want the corporation to represent.

Many CEOs also see leadership as requiring the development and communication of a vision of where the company is heading. Without a shared vision it would be difficult for middle managers and professionals in the company to make decisions. After all, if you are driving a car and come to a turn having to choose East or West, isn't it important to know what destination you are trying to reach? So the communication of direction and vision from the CEO helps in each of the thousands of small decisions which members of the organization make each day.
