If the burial is private in Switzerland it considered proper etiquette to publish the obituary after the funeral. If the burial is to be made public, the proper etiquette is to publish an obituary a few days before the funeral.

It could be that at the request of the mother a proper funeral not be held, just a graveside service. The expense of a proper funeral may also have been the reason. A simple graveside service is really all that is required. Family members may speak some kind words over the grave just as well as they can in a church.
