it depends on how you feel. sometimes it's best not to respond. some people choose to come home and address it in person. some people write back angry letters. it depends on how you feel. be careful not to write something you might regret, though.
A dear John letter renders the receipient "unimportant." It puts them in the anonymous class of the everyday rank and file, while at one time they were clearly valued. Why would anyone respond to that? And if they did, I would imagine it would be defensive and angry.
