A good gift is a gift that someone loves. If you give a gift to someone and he/she appreciates it, then it is a good gift. Good gifts are also gifts that give meaning in a nice way. Bad gifts give rude meanings. Bad gifts surprise people and people seem irritated and feel uneasy with a bad gift. Gifts are given to be good gifts. Bad gifts are simply thrown away and never kept as part of people's lives.
WATCHES AND CLOCKS are popular gifts in America but in eastern culture they suggest a limited life span. They symbolize time runing out. When you give them, you remind the recipient they have less time to live. If you receive one, the remedy for the bad luck from this type of gift is to immediately give the giver a coin to symbolize that you "bought" the gift from them. If not, according to superstition, your relationship may end or you may stop talking to each other.
In Chinese culture, knives are often associated with cutting and separation, which can symbolize the severing of relationships or good fortune. As a result, giving a knife as a gift is generally avoided, as it is believed to bring bad luck or signify the end of a friendship. Additionally, knives can also represent violence and conflict, so their use in certain contexts may carry negative connotations. Overall, the cultural perception of knives in China is one of caution and respect for their symbolic meanings.

Knives are see as a small version of swords; crossed swords is a sign for war, conflict, danger etc. hence crossed knives are seen as unfortuitous. Also during the 17th and most of the 18th century and earlier sword dueling took the lives of many male family members throughout Europe until outlawed. At the beginning of every duel the protagonists crossed the tips of their swords and then began the duel to injury or death. Thus in Europe it became a sign of bad luck and possible death of a family member to leave knives crossed and every time they were found crossed to uncross them to relieve this potential bad luck.
