I think that in every roommate situation, there are at least a few basic house rules. In the case of the child paying the parent rent, the child is transitioning into becoming a roommate with his/her parents, so there will still be certain rules that need to be followed. For example: no loud music after 10:00, no illegal drugs in the house, clean up after yourself (laundry, dirty dishes, etc.) On the other hand, a roommate has certain privileges that a child doesn't. For example: no curfew, no required family dinners, no required study hours if the child is in college. As the parent, you should be prepared with what you still expect from your child as a member of the household and you should also be prepared with what you no longer expect. As the child, you should be prepared with similar ideas. The parents and child should sit down and discuss what is expected and together come up with some ground rules that everyone can stick to. The number of rules and the restrictiveness of the rules could be based upon the amount of rent being paid. Is it just a minimum amount to start teaching responsiblity? Or is it the same rent that would be paid if the child moved into his/her own apartment? Ultimately, though, it is still the parents' house, so if the child doesn't like the rules, he/she can make the decision to move out and pay rent to someone else.
