how the chimney sweeps swept the cimneys
Many, Many years ago, when a steam railway ran from the pit head at what is now Stocks Blocks yard in Garforth, Leeds towards the pits at Kippax and Allerton Bywater. The Leeds - Selby - Kingston-upon-Hull trunk road (A63) crossed this railway line. On the Kippax side of that trunk road (known as Selby Road) on the edge of the railway line was just one cottage. The owner/occupier of that cottage was a tradesman and had identified his trade by the very visible 'Chimney Sweeps' brush sticking out of the top of his chimney stack. It was done in those days long ago before H.S. took over. Guess what? his name was Charlie and as the Selby Road curved towards Garforth Cliff, it became known as Charlie sweeps Corner.
