The linen attendant is nearly extinct in the US. This is the lady or man in a very upscale Hotel, restaurant or private club whom we called bathroom attendants. They will offer real towels , a brush-down , scent , or even minor mending to guests.
The only other context in which I have heard this term used is in sports, where there is a designated attendant for linens whom we now call the towel-boy[ or girl] .
