Burping is correct.
Yes burping is nasty
Burping is a normal human bodily function just as gas can be and all humans experience it on occasion. The main reason for burping is because the person may eat too fast and thus swallow air while eating or a food that does agree with them and causes heartburn. It is not rude to burp unless someone gets dramatic about it and lets out a belch thinking it's funny, but the etiquette to burping is to do so in one's napkin. In some countries belching or burping is a must and lets the host know the guest enjoyed the meal.

Phlegm itself doesn't directly cause burping, but it can contribute to conditions that may lead to burping. For instance, excess phlegm can lead to swallowing air while coughing or clearing the throat, which can result in burping. Additionally, post-nasal drip from phlegm can irritate the stomach, potentially increasing gas and causing burping as well.

They say that etiquette and manners are the grease of society, they ensure that due to our relative population density, we do not irritate each other too much. I think it stems from the "golden rule" Do unto others as thy would have done to thyself, this mixed in with traditional cultural behaviour leads to the formation of what is considered good etiquette and manners. For example, burping in some societies is seen as rude, but others as a sign of appreciation for the food. You should follow the etiquette of the region as a testament to the golden rule, the reason it is there is down to cultural interpretation of that rule. Its an interesting nuance of human interaction, and there is no real standard rule which is applied in all areas.
