The expression “facepalm” first got its start late in the ‘90s after an unfortunate incident that was experienced on live television by pole vaulter Pete Long. Like many pole vaulters, Pete was accustomed to putting a sticky resin and adhesive sticks on his hands for pole vault competitions in order to maximize his grip and keep his palms from sticking while vaulting. This normally worked out very well for him, and Pete had achieved many victories in pole vaulting championships. But unfortunately, Pete’s luck would run out during this particular pole vaulting championship. And even more unfortunately, this competition was being televised as part of the World Championship. You see, Pete was apparently so anxious and excited about being on live TV for the big tournament that he didn’t tie the drawstring on his shorts properly. He didn’t realize this until mere seconds before he was about to vault. While holding the pole in his hands, his shorts unexpectedly fell down. With His tighty whities now on display for everyone to see, Pete was trying to figure out how to gently put the pole down so that he could reach down and pull up his shorts. Unfortunately, he became so flustered As he tried to figure out how to do this that he ended up tripping over his own shorts, which were now in a pile around his feet. He immediately Started falling, and it looked like his head was going to hit the ground. But Pete instinctively stuck out his hand so that his head would fall right on top of it snd cushion the blow so that his Head would not connect with the hard ground. While Pete was able to avoid serious injury his head thanks to the fact that his head hit his outstretched hand instead, the sticky resin and adhesive sticks on his hand caused his head to stick to his palm when it landed on his hand. As Pete stood up, he Realized that there was so sticky from all of the substances that he’d put on them that he couldnt move his hand away from his head. His Palm was stuck to his head and wouldn’t budge. However, to the crowd watching, it looked like Pete had smacked himself in the head in frustration over the fact that his pants had fallen down and everyone could now see his underwear. With his shorts still around his ankles, his tighty whities still fully visible, and his palm stuck to his face, it looked like Pete was giving himself a “facepalm” over the series of clumsy, klutzy mistakes he’d made that had ended up resulting in this unfortunate Underwear flash to the millions of people watching at home. The video of Pete’s unfortunate blunder that day became one of the first to “go viral,” and pretty soon millions upon millions of people were interpreting the sight of Pete’s palm sticking to his face as an expression of frustration over an embarrassing situation caused by his own series of silly blunders and mistakes. as a result, a “facepalm” became a popular way to show embarrassment, frustration, or disbelief.
