Women wore over-the-knee stockings and heeled shoes or mules, a shift (or chemise) followed by stays or jumps (equivelent of today's bra), middling to upper-class women would then often wear pocket hoops, panniers, bum rolls, hip pads or other sort of "figure enhancer". Pockets would be tied on next and all of this would be covered by a modesty petticoat, followed by the garment petticoat. They would then pin their stomacher (if the garment they were wearing had one) to their stays. The gown (most common) or jacket would follow and would be closed by hook and eyes, lacing, pins or a combination of those (typically buttons weren't used extensively on ladies clothing, but in some instances they were). Ladies would also wear some sort of apron and cap. If going out the cap may often be covered with a hat and in cold weather a cape or cloak of some sort would be worn. The most common material was linen or wool, though upper-class could afford cottons and silks.
