If the auto industry had recognized and listened to their stakeholders around them they would have seen where the industry was headed and would have been able to identify that there was no longer a large need for the gas guzzling vehicles rather peopel wanted to purchase cars that were better for the environment even if that meant spending more money. If they had been on top of this people would not have started to try to find alternatives to using their vehicles and buying new vehicles and they may not have had the crash that they did. It is about the long term vision of things instead of seeing things in the tunnel vision view of what is happening today and not worrying about how it will effect tomorrow.
