With brand recognition, people buy a familiar brand because it is less risky. If the brand is popular this makes it easier for marketers to keep it being considered every time somebody is thinking of buying the item.

For example their are many different brands of cars but people do not think about every brand of car before they buy. They will have a list of car brands/companies that they consider suitable.

Social proof is where a product gains acceptance because everybody is using it. If there was a problem with it, people would not be buying it. Marketers can use this 'Social Proof' in advertising to show that they should be buying the product.

An example is Coca Cola. Coca Cola is brought by lots of people. Therefore Coca Cola must be good otherwise people would not buy it. This is a circular argument that marketers can use to enhance the brand.
