Good question.

The etymology of the word "advertise" goes back to the Latin advertere, which means "turn toward." In early French, this root had led to the word avertissement, which meant "warning" or "notice"--the idea is, "Turn (your attention) toward this warning/notice."

Eventually, in English, the word advertisement had come to mean "written notice posted in a public place," especially a commercial announcement, which is what it continues to mean today.
