Walmart considers all retailers to be their competitors. However, that's not really the case. In the market sector Walmart plays in, the full-line discounter, there are two national-level competitors: Kmart and Target. They also compete in more tightly focused markets. First is food. Walmart's problem here is there really aren't any national supermarket chains EXCEPT for Walmart. This forces them to craft a lot of strategies for competing against...oh, say Food Lion in the Southeast or Albertson's in the Northwest. Their other lines are a different matter. They compete against Autozone in oil and batteries, against Toys R Us in toys, against Best Buy in electronics. Clothing is scattered around--there are a LOT of clothing chains, but most have very small, targeted selections.
