There is a lot of debate as to whether the extra monetary cost of organic cotton is worth the risks associated with it. While most people are aware of the fact that organic means no pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizers, they don't know much more than that. Supporting organic cotton stops our water and air from being polluted.

Yet, there is a greater more humanitarian reason for buying organic cotton. Currently rich companies are selling these chemicals to farmers in underdeveloped countries. The companies tell the farmers that the chemicals will help keep bugs away, make the plants grow bigger, and other short promises. However, the bugs become immune to the chemicals over a period of time, and the farmers struggle to make a decent crop. The farmers had to spend all of their money on the chemicals, and then they don't have enough to support themselves. From 2002 to 2006, over 17,500 farmers have committed suicide, often drinking their own fertilizer, due to their poor quality lifestyle and unpayable debt.

So the next time you have the decision to buy organic or regular cotton, think about the lives you can change. Supporting organic cotton farmers supports positive working habits, and costs less for the farmer, thus helping the farmer rise from poverty.

How do you identify organic products?

Organic products have design logos/stickers on the packaging of the product stating that the product is organic in nature in terms of its usage, and how it was obtained without any harm to the environmental factors . but ensure that there are logos/ holograms of leading and reputed certifying bodies that has issued the organic label to the brand and if the product/brand is mentioning just as organic or certified organic, do ask the shopkeeper about the certifying body which has certified it as organic However legally, there are few restrictions on using the word organic in many countries, however, some people do manage to pass of spurious and uncertified products in the marketplace by direct or indirect means. Moreover, each certifying body follows its own set of standards for certifying a product as an organic one . therefore primarily you should check the credibility of the certifying body that has granted the organic seal when you buy any organic food available in the counter store. What is the difference between organic cotton and regular cotton?

Organic Cotton: Certified organic cotton must meet strict standards set by organizations such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or the Organic Content Standard (OCS). These standards ensure the cotton is grown and processed organically, without harmful chemicals, and with respect for workers' rights. Regular Cotton: There are fewer regulations governing conventional cotton production, and it often lacks the traceability that organic certification provides. This can make it challenging to verify the sustainability and ethical practices involved.
