Traditionally Mercedes has been credited with manufacturing vehicles with quality and durability being the aim, rather than the vehicle being built "down to a price" as with other volume manufacturers. The results dating back to the pre-war years were very well built and reliable long lasting vehicles, which whilst they would cost more to buy in the first place would almost certainly last a lot longer than a cheaper vehicle. Mercedes Benz were also at the forefront of diesel engine development for passenger vehicles, the OM616 engine in particular (2.4 litre naturally aspirated four cylinder diesel) was capable of up to 400,000 miles before needing attention. The higher purchase price also lent the brand a "Premium" image.

In the mid 1990's in an attempt to increase profits, some maintain that standards of quality were deliberately dropped in the company's vehicles leading to a poor standard of reliability. The company has since acknowledged this and "quality at any cost" is now the company's watchword again.
