Assuming you're referring to how vending machines separate coins, there are at least two different methods used.

Older machines relied on the fact that the two coins are different sizes and different weights. The coins would roll down a chute that had successively larger openings. Dimes, being the smallest, would fall through the first slot while larger nickels would roll over the opening and into another, larger one farther down.

Modern machines use an electromagnetic signal to "read" the coin based on its metal content and weight. Because each coin contains a different amount of metal (and in many cases different alloys) the signal "recognizes" each coin by matching its electronic response, or signature, to a set of known patterns.
