According to the link that I found, drawing a bar over a roman numeral is equivalent to multiplying the number by 1000. Also found reference to putting the number in parentheses.

Since 16000 is 16 times 1000 then you would have:

XVI { XVI is 16 and the bar above it multiplies by 1000} I would think the parentheses would not hold the same context, today, since parentheses are in common use, today.
