In Roman numerals you only use groups of three. So, 6=VI, 7=VII, 8=VIII, but 9 doesn't equal VIIII, as this would use 4 I's. Instead, the smaller number "I" is put before the number for ten ("X"), which means, "subtract 1 from 10".
