If this is in the United States you don't need to write a letter. At the very most a small note to the office telling them why or a doctors note will do the job. You can also call them since it was just one day.
Leave means it is with prior approval or intimation whether u were entitled for salary for that day or not and absent will mark for that day when without prior approval or intimation u were not in the office for the whole day
