The standard Roman numerals have 13 symbols in all, as follows:

I = 1

IV = 4

V = 5

IX = 9

X = 10

XL = 40

L = 50

XC = 90

C = 100

CD = 400

D = 500

CM = 900

M = 1000

To convert any number in the range 1-3999, repeatedly subtract the largest value that is less than or equal to the number and write it down. Repeat with the remainder until the remainder is zero.

For example, if the value is 1234, then M is the largest number that is less than or equal to it, leaving 234. Subtracting C twice leaves 34. Subtracting X three times leaves 4, and subtracting IV leaves nothing. Thus 1234 is MCCXXXIV in Roman numerals.
