The Romans did all their mathematics with just a handful of numerals

I = 1

V = 5

X = 10

L = 50

C = 100

D = 500

M = 1000

After this, for large numbers they used a line over the letter to represent that number multiplied by 1000. So that V with a line over it was 5000, X with a line over it was 10000, and so on.
