The number of symbols in the base of a number is equal to the base. Thus if the base is 2, there are two symbols, if the base is 8, there are eight symbols, if the base is 10, then there are ten symbols, if the base is 16, then there are sixteen symbols. Note that in each case "0" is a symbol. Also the base itself is not in the set of symbols. Thus there is no symbol for "2" in the base 2 system, no symbol for "8" in the base 8 system and so on. In each case the base is represented by the combination of the primitive symbols that run from 0 through (base - 1). Thus two in the base 2 system is represented as 10, eight in the base 8 system is represented by 10, and so on.
There are 16 symbols. The number of symbols is always the same as the base.
BAUDOT code uses 5-bit combinations, which allows for a total of 2^5 or 32 unique symbols.
It is impossible to provide an exact number of symbols that exist in the entire world since symbols are constantly being created and evolve across various cultures and languages. Symbols can range from letters and numbers to emojis, gestures, and cultural symbols, making it difficult to quantify the total number.
ASCII is a 7 bit code. There are many nonstandard extensions of ASCII to 8 or 9 bits by various computer companies. ASCII was developed to replace the obsolete 6 bit BAUDOT teletype code and was never originally intended for use on computers.

Visual language and code play an important role across cultures. When we think of symbols, many of us will be surprised to know that a lot of different cultures share similar or even the exact same symbols and visual languages. Visual language unites different cultures by means of symbols, gestures, and codes.
