Though The Bible doesn't necessarily use the word 'depression', because our lives are 'glutted with agitation' and filled with trouble and hurtful things (Job 14:1)(Psalm 90:10) the meaning is expressed on several occasions:

-David felt depressed after his sins: (Psalm 38:1-9)(Psalm 51:3, 9, 11, 17)and after the death of his son(2 Samuel 18:33)

-Abraham was saddened by the loss of Sarah. (Genesis 23:2)

-Elijah was so afraid and exhausted he asked to die (1 Kings 19:1-4)

-Nehemiah was gloomy because of the condition of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:1-8)

-Job felt abandoned by God (Job 29:2-5)(Job 7:15)

-Hannah was depressed because of being barren (1 Samuel 1:7-10)

-Peter was depressed about his errors (Luke 22:62)

-Paul felt miserable because of his sinful tendencies(Romans 7:19+24)

-Epaphroditus was depressed because of the effect his illness would have on the congregation (Philippians 2:25+26)

The heart can be in pain even in laughter (Proverbs 14:13)

God is near to those with broken hearts and crushed spirit (Psalm 34:18)(Psalm 46:1) and he comforts the depressed (2 Corinthians 7:6)(2 Corinthians 1:3+4), asking us to do the same (1 Thessalonians 5:14) during times of distress(Proverbs 17:17).

-Anxious care in the heart of a man causes it to bow down(Proverbs 12:25)

-Oppression causes the wise one to act crazy(Ecclesiastes 7:7)

-Negative talk can cause us to 'give out' in our souls (Hebrews 12:3)(Galatians 6:9)
