'bc' sera l'hypoténuse.

Le carré de l'hypoténuse est égal à la somme des carrés des deux autres côtés

'ab' mesure 5 cm, son carré est 5 X 5 = 25 cm; idem pour 'ca'.

25 + 25 = 50 cm

le carré de l'hypoténuse 'bc' est donc égal à 50 cm.

résultat : la longueur de 'bc' est égale à la racine carrée de 50 cm.
