A large wall mounted chalkboard/blackboard allows the students to see what the teacher has written. Any mistakes can be easily erased (rubbed-out) and corrections made. Whiteboards do the same thing, though special erasable felt pens are used instead of chalk. A paper display on an easel, big enough to do the same, would be less easy for students at the back of the class to see. Also, any corrected mistakes tend to look rather messy, and may mean turning to a fresh page and starting over again.
