In verses 1 & 2, God created Heaven and Earth. There was nothing else.
In verse 3 God 'invented' light and made Day and Night - This was the extent of his creativity on the first 'day'.
Note that in creating light and day/night he did so before he created - on day 4, the Sun, moon and stars.
