A:

All four New Testament gospels were written anonymously and were not attributed by the Church Fathers to supposed authors until later in the second century. The gospel now known as Matthew's Gospel was attributed to the disciple Matthew because this gospel emphasises the role of Matthew more than any other gospel. This does not mean that the author actually was Matthew, and modern New Testament scholars say that the gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed, but tradition ever since the second century links the gospel with Matthew.

Matthew's Gospel was originally written anonymously and only attributed to St Matthew later in the second century. However, scholars say that Matthew could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events it portrays. The disciple Matthew did not write any of the gospels.
