Another view: 6 represents the bounds of nature, since there are 6 physical directions (up, down, north, south, east, west). This explains in part the significance of the seventh day or the Sabbath, since it is beyond the physical realm.

Of course, we should not for a moment think that the biblical authors had either meaning in mind when they wrote, but modern readers look for meanings even when none exists, so for them, 6 has meaning in The Bible.

The Bible does indeed make use of numerology, and in those cases we can find reasons for believing the biblical authors really did consciously have specific meanings in mind. The next number in sequence is an example of this. The number 7 was used in Luke's Gospel in the genealogy of Jesus, to show that he was destined for greatness. Matthew use the number 14, two times seven, also to show that he was destined for greatness. No such meaning can be found for the number 6, but we can have fun looking at various retrospective meanings of numbers and seeing how many we can come up with.
