( 26 December 1791 - 18 October 1871) Was an English inventor who is perceived to be the originator of the programmable computer. His design of the "analytical" and "difference engines". These devices were designed to calculate logarithmic tables to high levels of accuracy to assist marine navigation.

More recently the discovery of the Antikythera mechanism (circa 100-150 a.d.) created at the has called into question of his being the first to create a programmable calculating machine. It may be that these devices have been available for millennia and Babbage was simply the most documented example.
