Roman numerals consist of the following:

I -- one

V -- five

X -- ten

L -- fifty

C -- hundred

D -- five hundred

M -- one thousand

etc

Any other numbers are expressed by using a combination of the abovementioned.

There are 2 rules governing this:

If a smaller number is placed in front of a larger number, the number expressed is the result of the deduction of the smaller from the bigger.

If a bigger number is placed in front of a smaller number, the two will be added.

9 is therefore IX (10 minus 1)
