It depends. Most everyone has a different answer for this one. Popular answers:

1) To love one another and try to help one another

2) To maintain the earth as a home and not wreck it

3) To teach everyone about God

4) To practice being better people so our souls become worthy of heaven

5) To be happy and kind

6) To obey God

7) To live beautifully, as intensely as possible

etc, etc. Loads of answers - you sort of have to find your own.

Opinion

It is apparent from many of the religious doctrines that this imaginary entity they call GOD is actually a slave master and a selfish, jealous authoritarian.

Some religions proclaim that their God demands absolute obedience and servitude in exchange for a lottery ticket to a place called Heaven.

This God discriminates against those who don't follow his prescribed doctrines and the attendant authorities of his exclusive appointees. Anyone who dares to challenge his absolute and dictatorial authority is punished with eternal damnation in a dungeon called Hell.

He also creates numerous disasters and plagues to annihilate those who do not find his favor. But he makes no effort to eradicate the scourge of vicious criminals who continue to terrorize good people in society. He blames the evil on his most powerful rival he calls Satan.

Opinion

God's purpose is for man to be in a perfect relationship with Him and then with each other and the environment into which He has placed man. Man chose to rebel and still does to this day. The place called Hell was not originally created for man but 'for the devil and his angels.' Men choose to go there as, if they went to heaven by force against their will, to live forever with a God they hate that would be hell for them.

God has given man dominion over the earth and all in it. Man does not always exercise that wisely as he tends to exploit other men and his environment. Fortunately an all-wise and loving God has created the renewing cycles, such as the oxygen cycle to keep us alive on this planet, and through Jesus Christ the way to peace with each other and Himself. Man is in dominion over the animals and the environment, but He certainly needs to learn to 'tread lightly on the earth.'

The Bible predicts that many will scoff which indeed they do as this is their choice but His purpose is that we love Him and appreciate the beauty and order of the world He has made. He wants those who know Him to be true witnesses to His way of bringing people back to Himself through Jesus Christ. He wants people to love and serve Him and each other in peace and to thoroughly investigate the incredible complexity of the world He has made and to give Him the glory for it.

Another View:

When religious leaders of the world are engaged in preaching hate and intolerance against other religious belief systems, then it is obvious that people would question the purpose of God. Some religious leaders behave as though they are businessmen competing in the market, advertising that theirs is the only genuine and certified product on the market.

If you can look beyond all the divisiveness, greed, animosity, intolerance and prejudice that corrupts most religions you may find that the true essence of piety, equity, righteousness, compassion and spirituality is enshrined within the lines of all truly Righteous belief systems.

If you truly wish to find your purpose then all you have to do is to religiously practice piety, equity, righteousness and compassion and you will find your spirituality.

Simple Answer:

Our duty is to serve Him and our purpose is to learn from him to prepare for entry to his Kingdom as members of His Family (see 2 Corinthians 6:18).

What did the god do when they arrived earth?

Before you can determine if gods really visited the earth you must realize the associations various peoples contributed to gods. For example, Zeus , the most powerful of the gods, was a designation for the atmosphere. Hera, his consort, was a name for the earth in ages long past. So, you see, it is not the actual deeds of gods on the earth but what we actually mean when we say gods.
