In todays modern notation of Roman numerals 1 to 100,000 are:-

Units from 1-9: I II III IV V VI VII VIII and IX

Tens from 10-90: X XX XXX XL L LX LXX LXXX and XC

Hundreds from 100-900: C CC CCC CD D DC DCC DCCC and CM

Thousands from 1000-9000: M MM MMM (IV) (V) (VI) (VII) (VIII) and (IX)

Tens of thousands: (X) (XX) (XXX) (XL) (L) (LX) (LXX) (LXXX) and (XC)

100,000: (C)

Numerals within brackets indicate multiplication by a 1000 and to select numerals simply write them out in descending order as for example 1999 = M+CM+XC+IX = MCMXCIX

Note that the ancient Romans had their own system of arranging these numerals as for example the equivalent of 1999 would have been simply IMM because:-

M+CM = CMM => (1000)+(1000-100) = (2000-100) = 1900

CMM+XC = XMM => (2000-100)+(100-10) = (2000-10) = 1990

XMM+IX = IMM => (2000-10)+(10-1) = (2000-1) = 1999
