Simply put, the result of reading something is knowing what it says. The result of studying something is understanding what it means. With secular literature, casual reading often results in understanding because the information is right on the surface. This is not so with The Bible, in which the spiritual concepts run far deeper than a casual reading will reveal.

What is the difference in studying the Bible and reading it?

The most basic answer is found in the definition of the words "study" and "read". (The following definitions are from Dictionary.com.) Study: application of the mind to the acquisition of knowledge, as by reading, investigation, or reflection: long hours of study. Read: to look at carefully so as to understand the meaning of (something written, printed, etc.): to read a book; to read music. When you study for school, you're trying to retain the information, not just read it. So studying the Bible would be doing the same - trying to retain the information. How do you retain information you're studying? You have to truly understand what you're looking at on all levels. Again, the same for studying the Bible, you'd be trying to fully understand it. Reading is just reading. I can tell you to look up a verse, like I John 4:7, 8, and you could look it up and read it to see what it says. Unless you decided to memorize it, you would only be reading the Bible.
