The Book of Leviticus was written by the Priestly Source around the time of the Babylonian Exile and was intended to supplement the existing religious laws. Chapter 18 prohibits serious sexual misconduct, particularly incest and bestiality, but also emphasises the prohibitions on a man having sex with another man's wife and on homosexuality. Verse 18:21 prohibits human sacrifice, a practice that had probably ceased among the Jews even before the Babylonian Exile.
To add emphasis to the prohibitions, which otherwise seem to have no force, the Priestly Source has the Lord say that these were the practices of their enemies and should not be practised by Jews, and that if they do these things they defile the land, which will spit them out.
