The accepted convention doesn't allow values greater than 3999. That is, no symbol may repeat more than 3 times.

However, using Middle Age notation, 5142 would be represented as:

V CXLII

The bar over the V multiplies it by 1000, thus making 5000. CXLII is 142. Note the space to separate the two values.

Breaking with convention, we could use MMMMMCXLII instead, but it's not as easy to read as the Middle Age notation.
