In Northern Ireland, a man bet another man that he could add a new word to the language in one day. During the night, the man put graffitti all around the town including the word "quiz" Sure enough, the next day everyone was talking about "quiz". The word was originally meaningless, and acquired its meaning later.

That could be a folk-etymology, but it's a fun story anyhow.
