Basic math 1+1 ect.

Pythagoras theorem is also involved in carpentry. For example, when building a triangular roof with one side perpendicular to the ceiling, Pythagoras theorem is needed to make all the sides meet evenly. Otherwise the triangle will be skewed from its right angled base property.

Pythagoras theorem is:

a2 + b2 = c2 (a squared + b squared = c squared, where c is the hypotenuse opposite the right angle).

In full words, as my former Maths teacher liked to put it:

In a right angled triangle, the square on the hypotenuse is equivalent to the sum of the square of the other two sides.

Carpenters call it the 3 4 5 rule.

32 + 42 = 52

(9 + 16 = 25)

This does not work for every set of numbers.
