the Egyptians

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be a little more detailed, the base-10 number system that we use is based simply off of our fingers. We have 10 fingers, and so when civilization was developing the concept of counting, it was easiest to count each additional unit to be counted using a finger to represent each unit. After 10 units were counted, another round of counting must have been started, using some other system (like another person's hand) to track the number of complete sets of 10.

To draw a parallel, if humans had evolved to have simply a club at the end of each arm instead of five fingers, it is likely that humans would have evolved using a base-2 number system (binary).

Maybe the Egyptians are the first known civilization to record this, but this theory is a widely-accepted theory as to the evolution and adoption of the base-10 number system.
