There are many Holy Spirit-inspired prayers recorded for us in the Psalms God gives to us to borrow and use, to help us out a little bit. It seems like there's something for any occasion. But I've found David's 51st Psalm to pretty much say it best in times of deep repentance and sorrow:

"HAVE MERCY UPON ME, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions..."

This is the one David prayed right after the Bathsheba/Uriah incident... when he found himself under God's Judgment and in peril of losing all... including his kingdom.

I've always found that to be a terrific beginning to a prayer... and it appears that God feels the same way:

"...I have found David the son of Jesse, a MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART..." (Acts 13:22).

But, then... if the sorrow in your heart is genuine... that IS your prayer and God sees it.

"...Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me... and take not thy Holy Spirit from me... The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." (verses 10-17)

Is the Confiteor an act of perfect contrition?

The Confiteor is a prayer of acknowledgment and repentance recited during the Mass in the Catholic Church, expressing sorrow for sins and asking for God's mercy. While it reflects genuine contrition, it is not necessarily considered an act of perfect contrition, which involves a deep sorrow for sin out of love for God rather than fear of punishment. The Confiteor can be part of a comprehensive act of contrition, but perfect contrition specifically requires a heartfelt love for God as its motivation.
