Mark (for whom one of the Gospels is named), was a Jew.

According to Acts 12:12 Mark was his surname, his first name was John and was the son of Mary (not the mother of Jesus). He was also a cousin or nephew ( Col 4:10) of Barnabas the companion of the Apostle Paul in his missionary objectives. It is believed that after the crucifixion of Peter (upside down I might add), Mark traveled to Egypt and there he founded the church of Alexandria. He was later killed for his Christian beliefs.>
