There are two types of situations which may result in suicidal thoughts or actual suicide. A person can have an actual problem, such as a disease, or a failed marriage, or unemployment (etc.) which is so terrible that this person would rather die than have to deal with it, or, in other cases, a person has no apparent problem but is still depressed, which can be caused by brain chemistry, such as a deficiency of a neurotransmitter. In the first case, you can certainly see if there is some way you can help your friend to solve his or her problems by some better means than suicide. In the second case, your friend can be helped by the right kind of drug, which a psychiatrist can prescribe.
