Two parts, first he was the money man for the ministry. He held the purse.
Second, he was the person who fulfilled the prophesy that the Messiah would be betrayed by a close friend. (Psalm 41:9, Zachariah 11:12-13)
Jesus had two disciples called Judas. One was Judas Iscariot, the other was just called Judas. Judas Iscariot is not known as Jesus brother, actually, he was the follower of Jesus that betrayed him to the Pharisees.
Not normally, because there were two disciples of Jesus with the names Judas. The Judas that betrays Jesus is generally called Judas iscariot so you can tell them apart.
Matthias, a follower of Jesus along with the twelve chosen Apostles, was chosen by a drawing (lot) of the shorter stick. Peter supervised this activity. This was done in response to the Old Testament prophecy "that another shall take his (the traitors) place". However, many bible scholars feel that the man Saul, who's name was later changed to Paul, was the God-appointed Apostle to take Judas Iscariots' place. Since there were hundreds of "disciples" under Jesus' ministry, the original 12 were not considered more holy or chosen than other men--they were simply the ones that Jesus chose to Tudor and mentor during this 3 year period. They were told to "go and make disciples" too.
Jesus' ministry was primarily in Galilee.
Judas Iscariot
Judas was the treasurer for Jesus and the disciples.
He was one of the 12 Apostles hand selected by Jesus to be by Jesus' side during his earthly divine ministry and who "betrayed" Jesus with a kiss in the garden of Gethsemane.
Judas did not interfere with the ministry of Jesus at all. In fact Judas helped move it into its conclusion. Jesus came to earth form heaven to died for mankind's sin. All men are born sinners and God cannot abide sin so He sent His only begotten Son to earth to die in the place of man and remove sin from anyone who will accept Him as their Savior. Jesus had to die on the cross at Calvary and Judas was used to turn Jesus into the people who wanted to kill Him. If Jesus had not died we would have no salvation.
Judas betrayed Jesus once. Peter denied Jesus 3 times.

The 12 disciples of Jesus were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot. Each disciple played a unique role in Jesus' ministry, such as preaching, spreading the teachings of Jesus, performing miracles, and supporting Jesus in his mission.
