Tarsus

(Acts 21:39) Then Paul said: "I am, in fact, a Jew, of Tarsus in Ci‧li′cia, a citizen of no obscure city. So I beg you, permit me to speak to the people."

(Acts 22:3) "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci‧li′cia, but educated in this city at the feet of Ga‧ma′li‧el, instructed according to the strictness of the ancestral Law, being zealous for God just as all of YOU are this day.

In addition to the above, Tarsus is no longer a busy trading centre as it was in those days, but still exists as a city about half way along the south coast of modern day Turkey. The remains of the ancient city of Tarsus are to be found among the modern buildings. As well as being a learned Pharisee under the tuition of Gamaliel, by trade, Paul was a tent maker who plied his trade in Tarsus before his work in Jerusalem for the Sanhedrin.
