There is no reference to the death of Daniel in the Book of Daniel, believed by some to have been from the second century BCE, written in the first person and therefore only covering events said to have occurred during his lifetime.

There are prior references to a Daniel in the Book of Ezekiel, where he was already compared to Noah and Job, but some scholars say that he would have been a much earlier Daniel, and in any case Ezekiel did not describe this Daniel's death. Although the Book of Daniel says that Daniel was second only to the king in both the Babylonian and the Persian empires, none of the records of either kingdom ever mentioned him, so we can not deduce from secular history when he died or even how late he was still alive, if indeed Daniel was a real, historical person.
