Many Christians believe that, John the evangelist, author of St John's Gospel, is the John mentioned as a disciple of Jesus. If so, he would probably have been born sometime late in the first century BCE, or perhaps very early in the first century CE.

However, scholars say that the Gospel According to St John was actually written early in the second century CE by an anonymous author and was not attributed to John until quite some time after the Gospel was written. In that case, the person we now call John the evangelist was not the disciple John. If the Gospel was written shortly after the turn of the century, then John was probably born around 60-80 CE.
