Disregard the first and last bar, they mark the beginning and end of the bar code. Each digit in a bar code is made up of 2 tall and 3 short bars, starting with the second bar read 5 bars as 7,4,2,1,0. which ever numbers has the tall bars add them to get the first digit of the bar code. 7 and 4 is 0.

The first Bar code is in LEGO website (see below). I opened the link in my iPhone and used the iPad to scan it. I tried at least 20 times before it worked. You will need to adjust the size of the Bar code.
IBM. IBM are the creators of the bar code, so I'm sure their the first to ever scan a bar code. The first bar code was on a 10 pack of Wrigley's gum. The first retail store to scan that pack of gum was at a Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio.
